There are so many people in this world who have different ethnic background, culture, and manner of living. This is the main reason for distinct values in the family. Family values are intangible matters that are important to us, and that guide us to make decisions. When raising a child, one is taught values by their families that they feel are important for their child to have. I believe that family values consist of certain actions and qualities that are important to a family to uphold.
Values that are important in my family are family unity, honesty, hospitality, responsibility, and respect. Each of these values is equally important in my family. Family unity is a family being together in blissful harmony. Family unity will always bring us close together and make our bonds stronger, regardless how bad the situation may be. Likewise, my family has always cherished time that family members spend together. My family unity has helped me maintain family identity and togetherness. It has brought support for each member, producing strong family bonds.
Therefore, family unity creates love, togetherness, communication, knowing of each other, which is an important family value. Honesty is telling the truth. It is being sincere, trustworthy, fair, and loyal with integrity. As a young child I thought it was cool to lie and get out of things so easily. I would often try to lie to my mom thinking that would save me from being punished. But, I soon learned that lying would only get me into more trouble than I was already. Moreover, Honesty has given me the reputation of being a good man.
My family taught me that honesty is the best policy. Hence, honesty is the foundation of any relation that is mean to last, and it is one of my important family values. Hospitality is also significant in my family. Being hospitable is treating guest or strangers warmly and generously. It is not only learned, but believed by each individual in my family. The Sanskrit saying, “Atithi devo bhava,” or “the guest is truly your god,” dictates the respect granted to guests in my family, and most of all my religion.
Responsibility means that you acknowledge the fact that your actions have a direct impact on yourself, good or bad. Everyone likes to be called a responsible person, but some of us are and some of us are not. Responsibility is something that is learned. Therefore, it is one of the important values of my family. Respect is also an important family value. For my family, to respect each other is to take feelings, thoughts, needs, and preferences in to account when making decisions.
It also means acknowledging and valuing everyone’s thoughts, feelings and contributions to the family as a whole. Everyone has their own set of values. People from their own background have their own set of beliefs, traditions, and culture. These asset set an important family values for each individual group which maybe similar or different from each other. Likewise the values that are important for my family are being together and united, to be sincere trustworthy and honest, to treat your guest as god, to always be responsible and respect others.
